Life Story

When I was 8 years old, Christ called me to Himself and life began.

My teenage years were truly a work of the Holy Spirit, guiding me in what to stand for and what to stand against. God was molding my character, despite my own desire to go down roads that He would quickly, providentially block off—such matchless grace. It was during this time that I began reading the Bible and focusing on prayer.

Immediately following my high school graduation, as a summer youth camp sponsor, the Lord revealed to me His call of vocational ministry on my life. This led me to view the beginning of my journalism studies that fall at the University of Oklahoma quite differently. Originally, I wanted worldly glory for myself. I wanted to be on TV and to be well regarded by the world. But the Lord intervened and said, “You are called to glorify Me with your life, Jared—your whole life.” He called me to surrender and serve His people as an equipper of saints.

During these crucial college years, I encountered a lot of arguments against the Christian worldview. But what secular professors meant for persuasion against God, He used to radically strengthen and direct me to follow Him in deeper devotion. The journalistic training and debate cemented in me a passion for writing, media study and engaging the culture with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Also during my time at OU, I was led to join a Christian fraternity called Beta Upsilon Chi (BYX, or Brothers Under Christ). Among these brothers, I found a place to grow and mature as a young man in Christ and to lock arms with men who would encourage me toward holiness and leadership. I learned for the first time to walk beside men in small groups based on unity, accountability and discipleship. These themes became the cornerstones of my formation and focus for ministry. I am blessed to continue serving BYX as a member of the national Board of Directors.

The Lord provided for my further education through degree programs at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Before being called to join the ministry of The Village Church in 2010, I served for two years on the national staff of Beta Upsilon Chi fraternity and three years as Pastor for Discipleship at Normandale Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

I married my beautiful bride and best friend, Jenny, in June 2008. She is a gift to me in her godliness and steadfast wisdom. We are parents of two incredible young boys, Jordan Steven and Joshua Michael.

Hope for The Village Church

My hope is for us to be a church making disciples for Jesus Christ. Our Lord demands us to be His disciples and disciple makers. That's our task. Let's wear ourselves out.
